My Dear Brothers and Sisters in My LORD Jesus Christ,
A few nights ago, in my time of devotion, our Precious Holy Spirit drew my attention to Galatians 3:7-4:6, in which Paul the Apostle declared:
“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ like a garment. There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free, male or female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.
Now I say that as long as the heir is a child, he differs in no way from a slave, though he is the owner of everything. Instead, he is under guardians and stewards until the time set by his father. In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elemental forces of the world. When the time came to completion, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba, Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.” (from the Holman Christian Standard Bible [HCSB] version of the Holy Scriptures)
Again, in Romans 8:14-18, the Apostle Paul declares:
“All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father!’ The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, and if children, also heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ — seeing that we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.” (from the HCSB version of the Holy Bible)
Friends, this second passage from Romans clarifies that while we are heirs of God, we are actually co-heirs with Christ. What does it mean to you that you are a co-heir with Christ, if you indeed have been saved by God?
We all know the concept of an heir, a son or daughter who inherits the legacy of a father or mother who has passed away. Currently, there is an entire generation of Americans who are getting older everyday. Social scientists expect that very soon, there will be a tremendous transfer of wealth, as the younger generations inherit the property of their parents and grandparents. These same social scientists expect that the younger generations will not be as good at saving and handling money as their older counterparts were. In my counseling practice, however, I have met many young people who have a pretty good head on their shoulders, so I believe that they will be just fine as they navigate managing the riches of their predecessors.
Having said all that, we know that heirs have a lot of rights due to the fact that they are the direct and first descendants of their parents. This is the concept of what it means to be an heir with Christ. By what our LORD Jesus accomplished on the Cross, everything, and I mean, everything, belongs to Him. It has to because with His Atoning Death on the Cross, our LORD Jesus regained everything that the Father lost when Adam and Eve sinned, including us, His people.
By accepting the lie of the enemy, Adam, the first man and the first steward of the Earth, and his Wife Eve temporarily gave control of the Earth and the Universe to that fool, the devil. Jesus came, not only to save us from sin and death, but to restore the rightful ownership of Everything back to His Heavenly Father by sacrificing Himself on the Cross.
Without the Death of Jesus, we would have all been lost, every single one of us, because there is no way that we could have been good enough to enter Heaven on our own accord. The Scriptures are clear that if it had not been for Jesus, our Savior, we would have all perished and been lost forever. Therefore, we owe our LORD Jesus tremendous gratitude for having the courage to face the torture and the Death that He endured on the Cross.
A wonderful thing also happened when our LORD Jesus died and rose again. The Word of God teaches that His righteousness was imputed onto us as a result. That means that because we have been born again, through the sovereign act and will of God, when our Father gazes at us, He does not see the filthy rags of our sin, but He sees the Glorious Righteousness of His Son.
And if we have the Righteousness of Christ on us, then the Bible teaches that we are co-heirs with Christ. Notice, it does not say that we are heirs on our own, for that would mean we usurp Christ. And it does not say sub-heirs because God does not see us as less than Christ. This is incredible because the Word of God calls us co-heirs with Christ; in other words, we will have the right of ownership to Everything in the Universe, just like Christ, when all is said and done.
I think you would agree that we are not equal to Christ, as He is the Son of God and the GodMan. But, it is fascinating that our Precious Holy Spirit in His Word call us co-heirs with Christ. While that does not mean we are the same as Christ, it does mean that God has chosen to give us everything that He will give His Son.
Again, this does not mean that we will rule above Christ, but we will rule WITH Christ, as co-heirs of the Universe and everything in it. We will be a race of human beings with the same rights as Jesus Christ, our LORD and Savior. That is how much our Heavenly Father loves us.
Do you indeed see how wonderful the Good News of the Gospel is? Do you now have a sense of urgency to share the Gospel with all of your loved ones who don’t yet walk with God, so that they can all share in Christ’s inheritance?
By virtue of His Death and Resurrection, our LORD Jesus ensured that we are all Sons and Daughters of the Living God, and if we are His Sons and Daughters, then we are all co-heirs with Christ, our Savior. Amen and Amen and Amen.
